Why Centella + Licorice?

The Thinking Behind The Garden Gel

When we began thinking about The Garden Gel, we did not start with the question:

“How many trending ingredients can we put into one formula?”

We started with a different one:

“What does this product need to do in the ritual?”

The answer was simple.

It needed to be light.

Easy to layer.

Comfortable enough for everyday use.

And different from the richer texture of The Night Oil.

That led us to a gel-serum format built around Centella asiatica and licorice.

Why Centella?

Centella is one of the botanicals that naturally connects Zenbotanique’s East Asian inspiration with contemporary skincare.

But a botanical name on the front of a bottle is not enough.

A finished product is still a formula.

Texture matters.

Preservation matters.

Stability matters.

And how the product behaves underneath sunscreen, makeup, or another skincare layer matters.

Why licorice?

Licorice gives the formula another connection to the botanical traditions behind the brand without turning the ingredient list into a collection of fashionable plant names.

We wanted fewer ingredients with a clear reason for being there.

Not more ingredients for the sake of a longer label.

The role of The Garden Gel

Within the Zenbotanique ritual, The Garden Gel has one job:

Begin with light hydration.

Use it after cleansing.

Use it alone when you want something simple.

Or follow it at night with The Night Oil when your skin wants more cushion.

Simple products are not necessarily easy to make.

Sometimes simplicity requires more discipline.

That is the kind of simplicity we are interested in.
