Wolfberry

Wolfberry

Wolfberry is the fruit of Lycium barbarum L., a woody shrub widely grown across Northwest China. Also known as wolfberry, this bright red fruit has been valued in Asian herbal traditions for more than two thousand years. Its vibrant hue, mild sweet taste, and gentle nourishing character make it a natural addition to our botanical library.

the Compendium of Materia Medica

Li Shizhen discusses Wolfberry in the herb section of the 1596 Compendium of Materia Medica. The historical record describes Wolfberry as sweet and mild, with traditional commentary linking it to nourishing practices for daily wellness. These descriptions belong to the historical materia medica tradition and are not modern scientific conclusions.

In modern practice & our ritual

NCCIH notes that Wolfberries have been studied in multiple research papers, but definite conclusions cannot yet be reached for most promoted health purposes. Whole dried berries and concentrated extracts are not equivalent, and findings vary with preparation, serving size, and product form. Wolfberry is a key botanical ingredient in our ginseng goji herbal tea blend. We use whole dried Wolfberries for a simple daily brewing ritual. The appeal here is the fruit’s natural sweetness, fruity aroma, and quiet self-care moment rather than a medical promise.

A short note

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take blood-thinning medication, have diabetes, or are considering high-dose goji extracts, ask a qualified healthcare professional before use.
