Aloe vera refers to the leaf gel of Aloe barbadensis miller, a succulent perennial plant native to Africa. Aloe resin arrived in China via Silk Road trade routes during the Tang Dynasty, and was formally recorded in Chinese herbal texts in the 9th century. Traditional healers used its sap externally for soothing skin care. The clear gel inside its thick leaves has long been valued for topical botanical care.

In the Compendium of Materia Medica
Li Shizhen recorded aloe in the Compendium of Materia Medica. He described aloe as cold in nature. Traditional herbal practice used its sap externally to soothe skin irritation and discomfort. These descriptions belong to the historical materia medica tradition and are not modern scientific conclusions.
In modern practice & our ritual
A 2025 review published in Frontiers in Nutrition summarized existing research on aloe vera gel. The paper confirms aloe gel carries moisturizing and soothing properties for topical skin use, while effects differ based on plant cultivar, processing method and individual skin state. Aloe barbadensis leaf extract is added in our hair serum. We use it for its lightweight hydrating feel, bringing gentle soothing sensation to scalp during daily massage ritual.
A short note
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have known plant allergies or sensitive skin, seek professional advice before topical application.
